Under the directive of Egypt Vision 2030, the Arab Republic of Egypt is driving unprecedented digital integration across its major industrial infrastructure. From the gas refining complexes in the Mediterranean Sea (such as the Zohr gas field) to the heavy manufacturing plants in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone), automation is shifting from manual monitoring to asset performance management (APM). The fundamental challenge for industrial engineers in Egypt is the integration of legacy analog devices. Millions of dollars of process hardware—transmitters for level, flow, temperature, and pressure—use traditional 4-20mA loops.
This is where HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer) protocol bridges the gap. By superimposing a digital frequency shift keying (FSK) signal on top of the 4-20mA analog signal, HART allows simultaneous transmission of both analog variables and advanced digital diagnostics. Instead of executing highly expensive, complete instrumentation overhauls, Egyptian factories are leveraging HART-to-Modbus and HART-to-USB converters to extract device calibrations, diagnostics, and operational variables.
Songmao Electronics, with 18+ years of dedicated expertise, stands as a key partner for Egyptian projects. By exporting to over 40 countries, we understand the critical environmental challenges in Egypt, including sand dust resilience, ambient extreme heat operation in desert oil rigs, and signal stability over long distances.
Historically, over 70% of process control instruments deployed in Egypt’s municipal water networks and chemical plants communicate solely via analog signals. This limits diagnostic capabilities to manual site checks.
Our HART Modems unlock critical diagnostics: sensor health, drift detection, and calibration metrics. This eliminates downtime and automates predictive maintenance protocols.
Understanding the engineering mechanics of industrial protocol converters in multi-drop and point-to-point topologies.
The HART protocol relies on the Bell 202 Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) physical layer to superimpose digital communications on the traditional 4-20mA current loop. The digital carrier operates at two distinct frequencies: 1200 Hz representing a logical '1', and 2200 Hz representing a logical '0'. Because the average value of this FSK AC wave is zero, it causes zero interference with the underlying 4-20mA analog signal, ensuring that safety-critical process variables continue to flow uninterrupted to PLC or DCS system analog input cards.
For operations using industrial interfaces, our converters play a pivotal role. The primary technical routes deployed by Songmao Electronics include:
Converts proprietary FSK diagnostics data into standard Modbus registers. This allows off-the-shelf SCADA systems and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) to easily retrieve secondary, tertiary, and quaternary process variables alongside primary device diagnostic data.
Extracts up to 4 dynamic variables (PV, SV, TV, QV) and loop status parameters from field transmitters. Enables monitoring of multivariable transmitters like radar level gauges or Coriolis mass flowmeters via a single physical wire loop.
Engineered for hazardous zones (ATEX/IECEx design philosophies). Galvanic isolation up to 1500V DC prevents electromagnetic field interferences and keeps technicians safe when configuring instrumentation on active high-voltage loops.

How modern industrial factories navigate the shift between legacy telemetry and future ethernet architectures.
In the global market, process automation is seeing standardisation of Ethernet-APL (Advanced Physical Layer) for field instrumentation. Ethernet-APL offers extremely high data speeds (up to 10 Mbit/s) over standard field bus cables and intrinsically safe designs. However, implementation costs are high. Real-world upgrades require replacing not just the devices, but also the controllers, power switches, and safety barriers.
For the next 15-20 years, HART and Modbus remain the dominant standard for brownfield industrial modernization. In developing industrial zones across Egypt, retrofitting existing systems using HART smart converters offers a cost-effective alternative. It enables access to predictive diagnostics without requiring complete infrastructure rewiring.
By using the SM100-M-32 multipoint collectors, factories can network up to 32 separate field loops into a single Modbus-RTU terminal, significantly reducing the cost per loop compared to Ethernet-based transitions. This makes digital migration highly practical and scalable for local operations.
